When Was Umlazi Built

Umlazi has deep historical roots dating back to 1845, when it was originally established as an Anglican mission station[1]. The area saw gradual transformation throughout the early 20th century, but the modern township of Umlazi was officially proclaimed by the apartheid government in the 1950s and 1960s[1]. Umlazi was officially opened to Black residents in 1965 and acquired formal town status in 1973[3]. During apartheid, Umlazi became one of the largest designated Black townships, with many residents relocated from other areas such as Cato Manor[2].
