Umlazi Massacre

On May 16, 2025, a mass shooting referred to as the “Umlazi massacre” occurred at the Zamani informal settlement in the U-Section of Umlazi, near Durban. Eight people—six men and two women, aged between 22 and 40—were killed when unknown gunmen entered a residence where the victims were drinking alcohol and opened fire before fleeing the scene[4][6]. The police and community leaders swiftly condemned the killings, describing the attack as a horrific act of violence that has no place in society[4]. According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the victims were found lying with multiple gunshot wounds, and a manhunt was launched for the suspects[6].

Community activists, like Eric Mshibe, linked this violence to social issues in Umlazi such as drug and alcohol abuse, calling for stronger police responses and increased community involvement in crime prevention efforts[6]. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli promised justice and dedicated a team of investigators to pursue the case[4]. As of the latest reports, investigations into the motive were ongoing, and police had appealed to the public for information that could assist in apprehending the suspects[6].
