In 2021, Umlazi’s load shedding schedule was managed according to Eskom’s staged approach, with areas allocated into different blocks that would undergo planned power outages depending on the national load shedding stage. Each stage determined how frequently and for how long electricity would be interrupted:
- Stage 1: Residential/Commercial blocks, including parts of Umlazi, were scheduled for load shedding once every second day.
- Stage 2: Blocks were shed once every day.
- Stage 3: Residential, Commercial, and Industrial blocks experienced daily outages.
- Stage 4: All categories were scheduled for daily outages, with additional interruptions for Residential and Commercial blocks on alternate days.
Each block usually faced a 2-hour outage, with a 30-minute buffer for switching. Due to network interconnections or faults, there could be occasional discrepancies in block allocation or restoration times[1].
Umlazi was specifically listed as one of the affected areas, and residents were encouraged to consult official municipal schedules to identify the block associated with their property and match it against the published timetable for the specific load shedding stage.
Beyond planned load shedding, Umlazi also faced challenges from unplanned power cuts and so-called “load reduction,” which disproportionately affected poorer and informal settlements within the area. These interruptions, often separate from official schedules, were sometimes due to grid overload, illegal connections, or infrastructural inadequacies, intensifying difficulties for local residents[2].
