Umlazi, a township in South Africa, has experienced several recent mass killings that have drawn significant police attention and public concern.

On August 17, 2024, six men were shot and killed at an informal settlement in V/6 Section, Umlazi. According to authorities, the victims were socializing with three women when two unknown men approached, asked about cigarettes, and were told to leave. The men returned, instructed the women to lie down, and opened fire on the male victims, killing all six at the scene. Investigations indicated the killings were revenge-motivated, linked to prior conflict between Xhosa-speaking victims and Swati nationals living in the area. Melusi Dlamini, a 28-year-old Swati national, was arrested in July 2025, charged with six counts of murder and related firearm offenses, while police search for a second suspect continues[1].

Another significant incident occurred on May 16, 2025, at the Zama informal settlement in Umlazi’s U Section. Around 9 pm, an unknown number of gunmen entered a tavern and fired on patrons, killing eight people (six men and two women) aged 22 to 40. Emergency responders found all victims dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, and investigations into the motive remain ongoing[2][3][4][6].

These events form part of a broader pattern of violence in Umlazi and surrounding Durban, often tied to gang conflicts, revenge attacks, and other interpersonal disputes. The high prevalence of firearms, both legal and illegal, as well as entrenched social issues, contribute to a national murder rate of roughly 75 homicides per day across South Africa[3][4]. In the same period, Durban police dealt with other high-profile shootings, including the fatal wounding of four murder suspects in April 2025 following a shootout with police on the M4 highway in Umlazi[5].
